How to double crochet (dc)

Today we’re going to learn the double crochet stitch, which is abbreviated as ‘dc’.

The double crochet is one of the most commonly used stitches. Its a great stitch for beginners to learn, but it doesn’t stop there. Even in super intricate projects, you’ll likely find a row of dc’s in there.

Ready to get started? Lets go!

Overview of the double crochet stitch

I think it helps to have a quick overview of a new stitch you’re trying to learn. Here’s a quick rundown of the double crochet stitch:

  • yo
  • insert hook
  • yo
  • pull through 1 loop
  • yo
  • pull through 2 loops
  • yo
  • pull through 2 loops

*yo is the abbreviation for ‘yarn over’

This tutorial is working a dc into a previous row of dc’s. There will be another tutorial showing you how to work dc’s into a foundation chain.

Double crochet instructions

Before you begin, note where you’ll be placing your next stitch. You’re going to be working in the stitch that has the needle through it. This goes under both the front loop and back loop of the dc in the previous row.

Step 1 of completing the Double crochet stitch: Note where you'll be placing your stitch. This goes under both the top loop and back loop of the dc in the previous row.

Yarn over. Bring the yarn over your hook from back to front coming towards you.

Step 2 of completing the Double crochet stitch: Yarn over your hook from back to front.

Insert hook through the stitch. Remember, this goes through the entire top stitch of the dc in the previous row.

Step 3 of completing the Double crochet stitch:  Insert hook through the stitch. Remember, this goes through the entire top stitch of the dc in the previous row.

Yarn over again. You don’t need to insert your hook – just yarn over as it is.

Step 4 of completing the Double crochet stitch: Yarn over again. You don't need to insert your hook, just y/o as it is.

Pull through 1 loop. You should have 3 loops on your hook.

Step 5 of completing the Double crochet stitch: Pull through 1 loop

Yarn over. You don’t need to insert your hook – just yarn over as it is again.

Step 5 of completing the Double crochet stitch: Yarn over again

Pull through 2 loops. You should now have 2 loops on your hook. (Almost there!)

Step 6 of completing the Double crochet stitch: Pull through 2 stitches.

Yarn over. You don’t need to insert your hook – just yarn over as it is one last time.

Step 7 of completing the Double crochet stitch:  Yarn over 1 last time.

Pull through 2 loops. That’s it! You’re done!

Step 8 of completing the Double crochet stitch: Pull through 2 stitches. YOU'RE DONE!
