What crochet projects can I make using self striping yarn?
Well, I’m glad you asked 🙂 Self striping yarn happens to be my absolute favorite type of yarn! When I first bought a couple yarn cakes, I logged onto Pinterest (as I always do) and searched for crochet projects made with this yarn. I typed, “what can I make with lion brand mandala” and “crochet projects for caron cakes”, but I couldn’t find many articles that consolidated various crochet projects using this kind of yarn.
So I thought, I can do that! And here we are!

Without further adieu, here is a collection of crochet projects using self striping yarn. For the patterns that I’ve personally tried, I’ve included pictures so you can get an idea of different color options.
#1. Mermaid purse
- Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Stripes
- Color way: Polo Stripe
- Yarn weight: 4/medium (i.e. Aran or 10 ply yarn)
- Suggested hook size: This yarn recommends a 5.5mm, but she used a 6mm
- Pattern: Mermaid Purse Pattern by Crazy4CrochetMomma
- Sample project: I made this using the same yarn as the designer and I LOVE how it turned out!!
This purse design is great to showcase self striping yarn, especially if you’re using some bright and fun colors!
I made this purse for my daughter over the summer, and she loved it! It was the perfect purse for her, especially since she was learning to swim when I made it. It truly made her feel like a little mermaid!
#2. Wishing Well Wrap
- Yarn: Lion Brand Mandala Baby
- Color way: Wishing Well
- Yarn weight: 3/light (i.e. DK or 8 ply yarn)
- Suggested hook size: This yarn recommends a 5mm, but she used a 6mm
- Pattern: Wishing Well Crochet Wrap by Sewrella
- Sample project: None yet, but you bet this is on the very top of my list of upcoming crochet projects
This is one of the first projects that caught my eye when I started crocheting. Ashleigh’s pattern is beautiful, and I can’t wait to make my own shawl!

#3. Corner to Corner Blanket
- Yarn: Lion Brand Mandala
- Color way: Spirit
- Yarn weight: 3/Light (i.e. DK or 8 ply yarn)
- Suggested hook size: 5mm
- Pattern: Lion Brand Mandala Corner to Corner Blanket by Crochet In The Sun. This also includes a full C2C photo tutorial.
The Mandala yarn look so nice in a Corner to Corner design doesn’t it!?
This blanket showcases the color changes so nicely, and is super soft to the touch. The easy-to-remember technique of the Corner to Corner is sure to make this a pattern keeper, and one you might repeat many times in the future!
#4. Sea Breeze Cover Up
- Yarn: Scheepjes Whirl
- Color way: Sea Breeze Tease
- Yarn weight: 1/Super Fine (i.e. Fingering or 4-ply yarn)
- Suggested hook size: 4mm
- Pattern: Sea Breeze Cover Up by Katerina
This Cover Up brings out all the warm-weather feels! The Scheepjes Whirl works great with this design because the gradual color change spreads down the entire piece.
BONUS: Did you know that you can make this entire cover up using just 1 Whirl?!
#5. Crochet Cluster V-stitch blanket
- Yarn: Caron Chunky Cakes
- Color way: Plum Perfect
- Yarn weight: 6/super bulky (i.e. super chunky or 14-16 ply yarn)
- Suggested hook size: This yarn recommends a 8mm, but Sarah used a 6mm.
- Pattern: Crochet Cluster V-stich blanket by Repeat Crafter Me
I love Sarah’s twist on using self striping yarn with a solid color yarn. Alternating these cherry and blue tones with bright white make for a delicious blanket that I’m sure is as snuggly as it is beautiful!
#6. Bella Vita Shawl
- Yarn: Hand Tied Color Gradient Yarn – Cotton Acrylic blend (50/50)
- Color way: Serenity
- Yarn weight: 1/Super Fine (i.e. Fingering or 3-ply yarn)
- Suggested hook size: 3.5mm
- Pattern: Bella Vita Shawl by Wilmade
Tell me this pattern doesn’t make you want to pick up a lightweight yarn cake and make this beautiful shawl right now! *swoon*
#7. Cloudberry Blanket
- Yarn: Caron Chunky Cakes
- Color way: Ballet Sorbet
- Yarn weight: 6/Super bulky (i.e. super chunky or 14-16 ply yarn)
- Suggested hook size: 8mm
- Pattern: Cloudberry Blanket by Mijo Crochet
- Sample project: Cloudberry Blanket by Crochet In the Sun
If you’ve followed me for a bit, this one might look familiar to you. It was my very first crochet project, and remains up there with my all-time favorites.
This pattern is a bit more challenging than a “beginner” pattern because there’s a new stitch pattern each rows – but thats what makes this design so gorgeous. This blanket was enjoyable to make. I highly recommend grabbing a cake of your favorite yarn and jumping into this pattern.
