It sounds like you guys are big fans of self striping yarn too! Yahoo, let’s keep it rolling! Here are 8 more crochet projects for self striping yarn, whirls, and ombre yarn.
#1. Simple crochet scarf
- Yarn: Loops & Threads Copenhagen in Blush colorway – 1 skein! This yarn is hard to find, but good substitutions are Loops and Threads Charisma in Strawberry, Lion Brand scarfie, Lion Brand Mandala Thick & Quick, or Caron Chunky Cakes.
- Yarn weight: 6/Super Bulky (Super Chunky)
- Suggested hook size: 10mm (N-15)

If you’re looking for a simple crochet scarf pattern that uses just 1 skein of yarn, this is a great pattern for you! This project uses super bulky yarn, but you can certainly use thinner yarn as well. It just depends if you want to end up with an elegant thinner scarf or chunky, cozy scarf.
The color changes look gorgeous throughout the pattern, doesn’t it!?
#2. Dakotah’s Fabulous Scarf
- Yarn: Red Heart Unforgettable
- Color way: Echo (1 skein)
- Yarn weight: 4/Medium (i.e. Aran or 10 ply yarn)

This scarf has great texture and beautiful stitch detail! The changing stitches work SO nicely with the changing colors. I highly recommend if you’re looking for a fun and colorful scarf.
Last year I made this scarf using Red Heart Unforgettable in the ‘Dragonfly’ color way. Phew, it sure is beautiful!
#3. Orchid Lace Afghan
- Yarn: The original blanket by Crocheting Crazy uses Yarn Bee Sweet Delight Baby. When I made used her pattern to make my blanket, I used Lion Brand Mandala Sparkle (shown below).

This may be one of my favorites. The colors of this blanket are to die for, and I will definitely be picking up another yarn cake in this colorway soon!
#4. Giana Mobius Scarf

This is certainly one of the most stunning projects I’ve seen using Scheepjes Whirl yarn.
It’s a very unique pattern, as the color changes work sort of ‘around’ the piece, rather than back and forth. It’s a gorgeous design that would look great with any self striping yarn.

#5. Latte Cakes Scarf (Open Windows Scarf)
- Yarn: Caron ‘Lovely Layers’ Latte Cakes
- Color way: Pretty Plum
- Yarn weight: 5/bulky (chunky)
- Suggested hook size: 6.5mm (K – 10.5)

This scarf is SO soft, the perfect accessory on a chilly day when you need to keep your neck nice and warm. This yarn is 58% Acrylic & 42% Nylon and isn’t scratchy or annoying at all.
Although this yarn is a weight 5/bulky, it’s not so bulky that you have a hard time zippering your jacket up all the way to your neck. Let me explain: I live in the Northeast and (try to) go for a walk every day, so I understand warmth AND function are both important 🙂
I wanted to mention this because some scarves are so bulky, that when you zip your jacket up, everything gets bunched up by your neck, which doesn’t feel awesome! But this is much easier to layer under a winter coat!
So if you’re looking to make a comfortable, cozy scarf with 1 skein of yarn, this is the one to make!
#6. Whitby Blanket
- Yarn: Lion Brand Mandala
- Color way: Spirit (2-3 skeins)
- Yarn weight: 3/Light (DK)
- Suggested hook size: 5mm (H-8)
- Pattern: Whitby Baby Blanket by Teresa Chorzepa

If you’re looking for a baby blanket – or a kids blanket in general – this is a great choice. The pattern is simple enough that you don’t need to keep referencing the pattern directions, but the color changes prevent it from looking too plain. It’s always fun to see when a color change is coming 🙂
This pattern is actually my go-to when I find out I need to make a baby blanket within a week (phew!!) It’s happened twice so far and I made the deadline both times 🙂
I mean, how gorgeous are these colors! Alternating between dc rows and <dc+chain> rows looks so gorgeous here.

- Yarn: Joanna’s original pattern uses Red Heart Shimmer, which is unfortunately now discontinued. A close substitute is Red Heart Hygge Charm yarn.

This is such a popular pattern, and it’s not hard to see why!
The Virus blanket has such a beautiful stitch pattern, and looks great in any color combination – alternating colors, 1 solid color, and especially – you guessed it – self striping yarn!
I personally love how color-changing yarn looks when the pattern starts in the middle and work its way out in a square, circle, or rectangle. The color changes don’t appear quite as abruptly that way.
If you check on Ravelry, there are over 1,500 finished projects for the Virus Blanket pattern, so you can browse and get a feel for what yarn you want to use. Ombre yarn looks especially stunning with this pattern!
#8. Cotton Dish Cloth
- Yarn: Paton’s Grace
- Color way: Clay and Snow (less than 1 skein each)
- Yarn weight: 3/Light (DK)
- Suggested hook size: 3.75mm (US 5-F) or 4mm (US G-6)

Lastly, try out this beautiful dishcloth! It has a very pretty texture and a nixe stitch-repeat.
Sample project:
The original project didn’t use self striping yarn, but I thought – oh I bet it would look nice with some color!! So I made one using Caron Cotton Cakes in the ‘Beachglass’ colorway.
I placed the dishcloth in woven tray in my kitchen, which now holds our french press, kettle, and a beautiful little orchid by the window. It adds a serene color to this space, and I adore it 🙂
